Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hits cinemas this week.

For those not already hooked the final trailer provides more insights into the movie’s plot, including why young Noa sets out on his quest and why Mae, the human female he befriends, is so interesting.

We already knew boss ape Proximus Caesar had designs on long-forgotten human technology to help strengthen his reign and when it’s discovered Mae can talk, she becomes the key to unlocking those mysteries.

In the meantime it seems Proximus has been solidifying his rule the old-fashioned way, which includes burning down Noah’s village and carrying off his family.

The film is set 300 years after the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes in which the first tribe of advanced apes led by Caesar struggled to establish themselves. It turns out that Caesar has an interesting connection to the latest instalment in the franchise.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in cinemas from May 9.
